KATH Awards for Student Papers
Madison County Civil War Round Table Award

Every year the Kentucky Association of the Teachers of History (KATH) presents the Thomas D. Clark Prize: a $100 award and certificate to a Kentucky undergraduate student for writing a high quality history research paper. Starting in 1998, the Madison County Civil War Round Table (MCCWRT) provided two additional awards for the KATH competition.

Following the established KATH guidelines below, the winning papers for the Madison County Civil War Round Table (MCCWRT) prizes must cover a topic in Kentucky Civil War history. Both prizes entail a year's free membership to the Round Table (which meets alternatively in Richmond and Berea), so the contestants are restricted to only those students attending college in central Kentucky and can conceivably attend our bimonthly meetings. (See our list of the eligible institutions.) First prize for this category is $100 and the MCCWRT membership; second prize is the membership and an honorable mention certificate. If the KATH judges decide that the winning Kentucky Civil War paper is best overall, then that writer will receive a total of $200.

Guidelines

All entries must be accompanied by a letter from the supervising history professor or, if unavailable, the chair of the department, recommending the paper and certifying that the paper was written for an undergraduate class and completed in the academic year in which the award is given. The student's permanent mailing address should appear on the title page of the paper.
Manuscripts, excluding endnotes and appendices, must not exceed twenty-five (25) typed pages in length and should conform to the rules of A Manual of Style (Chicago: University of Chicago Press), in regard to bibliography, footnotes and other grammatical and stylistic matters.
A student shall NOT enter more than ONE paper.
Entries must meet the guidelines and be postmarked on or before June 1st for consideration by a panel of historians. Send three (3) copies of each paper to the Clark Prize Committee, care of the President of KATH.
