KATH Awards for Student Papers

George C. Herring Graduate Student Writing Award

The George C. Herring Graduate Student Writing Award is awarded annually to an outstanding paper written by a graduate student attending a Kentucky university. The essay may be on any historical topic. It should be article length, double-spaced, 12 pt. type, and conform to the rules of The Chicago Manual of Style in regard to bibliography, footnotes/endnotes, and other grammatical and stylistic matters. The amount of the award is $100.

All entries must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the supervising history professor or, if unavailable, the chair of the department. The student's permanent mailing address should appear on the title page of the paper. The deadline is June 1st.

Send three (3) copies of each paper to the Chair of the Herring Prize Committee:

Thomas D. Clark Prizes

      The winner for the best undergraduate research paper in history at a Kentucky college or university written during that academic year will receive a $100 prize and a certificate.
      All entries must be accompanied by a letter from the supervising history professor or, if unavailable, the chair of the department, recommending the paper and certifying that the paper was written for an undergraduate class and completed in the academic year in which the award is given. The student's permanent mailing address should appear on the title page of the paper.
      Manuscripts, excluding endnotes and appendices, must not exceed twenty-five (25) typed pages in length and should conform to the rules of A Manual of Style (Chicago: University of Chicago Press), in regard to bibliography, footnotes and other grammatical and stylistic matters.
      A student shall NOT enter more than ONE paper.
      Entries must meet the guidelines and be postmarked on or before June 1st for consideration by a panel of historians. Send three (3) copies of each paper to the Chair of the Clark Prizes Committee,

Annual Anita Sanford Tolson High School Writing Award

      The Kentucky Association of Teachers of History (KATH) invites teachers to submit papers written by high school students on history-related topics. A certificate and cash award of $100 will be granted to the winning student.       The final deadline for papers is the last Friday of May of each year, with the winner and individual teacher being notified during the summer months. The winner will be honored at the annual KATH conference held in September.

Guidelines
  1. The paper's topic will be determined by the writer.
  2. The paper's length will be 1,500 to 2,500 words, exclusive of bibliography and supplemental material.
  3. The paper's bibliography will include a minimum of eight (8) references (excluding standard encyclopedia), some of which must be primary sources. Citations -- footnotes, endnotes, or internal documentation -- are required.
  4. Papers will be evaluated on the following criteria (in the order of their importance):

    name and grade name of teacher sponsor
    permanent address name of school
    phone number address and phone number
    date of submission
