The Thomas D. Clark Undergraduate Student Writing Award is awarded to an undergraduate student who has written and outstanding research paper in history while attending a Kentucky college or university (during that academic year). The winner will receive a $100 prize and a certificate. All entries must be accompanied by a letter from the supervising history professor or, if unavailable, the chair of the department, recommending the paper and certifying that the paper was written for an undergraduate class and completed in the academic year in which the award is given. The student's permanent mailing address should appear on the title page of the paper. Manuscripts, excluding endnotes and appendices, must not exceed twenty-five (25) typed pages in length and should conform to the rules of A Manual of Style (Chicago: University of Chicago Press), in regard to bibliography, footnotes and other grammatical and stylistic matters. A student shall NOT enter more than ONE paper. Entries must meet the guidelines and be postmarked on or before June 1st for consideration by a panel of historians. The George C. Herring Graduate Student Writing Award is awarded to a graduate student who has written an outstanding paper while attending a Kentucky university. The paper may be on any historical topic. It should be article length, double-spaced, 12 pt. type, and conform to the rules of The Chicago Manual of Style in regard to bibliography, footnotes/endnotes, and other grammatical and stylistic matters. The winner will receive a $100 and a certificate. All entries must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the supervising history professor or, if unavailable, the chair of the department. The student's permanent mailing address should appear on the title page of the paper. The deadline is June 1, 2009. The Ray Betts Award provides a $100.00 prize for the outstanding undergraduate research paper on a world history topic. The paper can consider American issues and material if the bulk of the paper has a world focus. Papers can be from any time in world history but must have been written for an undergraduate course during the 2008-2009 academic year. The paper must be a minimum of 2500 words excluding required notes, bibliography, and cover page. Please submit one copy of the paper with the cover sheet, ensuring that the student’s name does not appear elsewhere in the paper (headers, etc.) so that copies of the paper can be distributed to the judges. The paper needs to be accompanied by a letter of nomination from the professor recommending the paper for the award. No other materials are needed. The Anita Sanford Tolson High School Writing Award is awarded to a high school student who has written an outstanding paper on a history-related topic. Teachers will submit the papers. The winner will receive a certificate and cash award of $100. The deadline for papers is May 29, 2009, with the winner and individual teacher being notified during the summer months. Guidelines: The paper's topic will be determined by the writer. The paper's length will be 1,500 to 2,500 words, exclusive of bibliography and supplemental material. The paper's bibliography will include a minimum of eight (8) references (excluding standard encyclopedia), some of which must be primary sources. Citations -- footnotes, endnotes, or internal documentation -- are required. Papers will be evaluated on the following criteria (in the order of their importance): overall quality; depth of research; analysis and interpretation of information; effectiveness of topic development; and length. The paper's cover page will include the following information: the writer’s name, grade, permanent address, phone number; also the school’s name, teacher sponsor’s name, address, and phone number should be included.
