A message from KATH President, Rick Smoot:

Welcome to the Kentucky Association of Teachers of History (KATH) Website. KATH is a community of history and associated educators from all sorts of venues in the profession. KATH offers these professionals opportunities to network and to experience professional development events, especially through our annual conference. In this way we hope to improve the scope and quality of teaching history throughout Kentucky.

This September 25th, 2010, a Saturday, our annual conference will be held at Bluegrass Community and Technical College, on the Cooper Drive campus, next to Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, heart of the Bluegrass, the “Horse Capital of the World.” This year’s theme is "Political Revolutions in the United States," and our keynote speaker is Dr. Craig Thompson Friend, Professor of History and Director of Public History at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

In addition to our luncheon with presentation from Dr. Friend, KATH also will hold its annual business meeting and awards ceremony for the several student paper awards we offer: the Anita Sanford Tolson Award for high school students; the Thomas D. Clark Award for undergraduates in American history; the Ray Betts Award for undergraduates in non-U. S. history; and the George Herring Award for graduate level papers. All papers must be written by a student attending a Kentucky educational institution. Please follow the links under “mission” to learn more about these awards.

Please make your plans now to attend the annual KATH conference at BCTC in Lexington, Saturday, September 25th! We look forward to seeing you there!

Yours for history education,

Rick Smoot, Ph.D.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Cooper Campus

"Political Revolutions in the United States"

Craig T. Friend, Ph.D., is a Professor of History at NC State (http://history.ncsu.edu) and the Director of Public History (http://history.ncsu.edu/graduate/about) - see also the program's FaceBook group page. The Public History program at NC State University originated in 1967 and ranks among the premier programs in the nation, preparing students to work in a variety of public and applied history settings. Friend received his BA in history at Wake Forest University, his M.A. from Clemson, and his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. Friend has authored many articles, essays and books -- his most recent book, Kentucke's Frontiers, examines how the Native American hunting grounds of Kentucky transformed first into a New West frontier of the post-Revolutionary War era and then into an Old South frontier after the turn of the nineteenth century.

He taught at Georgetown College in central Kentucky and at the University of Central Florida before joining the NC State faculty in 2005. Professor Friend serves as the national conference coordinator for the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR). As the Director of Public History, he teaches the Introduction to Public History as well as a course in History and Memory which is taught on-site in Washington, D.C. He also teaches the Early American Republic and Early American Frontiers, courses emanating from his scholarly interests.
