KATH: Kentucky Association of Teachers of History
Kentucky  Association  of  Teachers  of  History

Who are we?

The Kentucky Association of Teachers of History is a service organization for those concerned about improving the quality of history education in Kentucky. Although our name emphasizes history, our interests are interdisciplinary and include the humanities and the social sciences. Members include elementary, middle school, high school, and college and university teachers, as well as administrators and public historians. We believe in collaboration and cooperation among all levels of instruction.
KATH communicates through a semiannual KATH Newsletter which contains information on teaching strategies, reviews of new books and publications of interest to the profession, announcements of professional meetings, reports of activities and fellowships and scholarships available to teachers, organization information and other items. Articles and information are contributed by members.
An annual meeting on a Saturday in the fall brings together teachers from all levels and focuses on varied and interesting themes, ranging from current historical trends to recent teaching strategies. The exchange of ideas and the fellowship shared at these meetings and at the Friday night receptions are some of the main attractions for members.
KATH also honors an outstanding Kentucky historian, Dr. Thomas Clark, with two awards of a certificate and $100.00 each to the college undergraduate who has produced an outstanding research paper. KATH also presents a certificate and $100.00 to a high school student who has produced an outstanding research paper. This is the Anita Sanford Tolson award given in honor of one of the founding members of KATH and a long-time member of the KATH Executive Committee. In honor of Dr. George Herring, who has mentored hundreds of graduate students at the University of Kentucky, a new award was instituted in 2000 for the best graduate research paper. The KATH awards are presented annually at the fall conference. Please review the guidelines for these awards.
You are invited to become a member of KATH. Annual membership dues are $5.00 for students; $10.00 for a regular membership; and $15.00 for an institutional membership. If you decide to join, print out the registration form and send it with your payment to Alana Cain Scott, Morehead State University, Rader Hall, Dept of History, Morehead, KY 40351.
